State powers top East

FISHERS — Class 4A No. 13 Columbus East went up against two of the state’s top teams Saturday and came away with a 72-67 loss to 4A No. 7 Fishers and a 52-37 loss to 4A No. 6 Hamilton Southeastern in the Hamilton Southeastern Classic.

Koryn Greiwe led the Olympians (2-2) with 18 points against Fishers and 10 against Southeastern. With the first basket against the Royals, she became the seventh player in East history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. She now has 1,008 points.

Leah Bachmann also scored 18 points for the Olympians in the morning game against the Tigers. Emma Jenkins added 13 points, and Gabby Dean had 12.

Fishers’ Katie Howard, whose grandfather Terry Howard played with East coach Danny Brown at University of Louisville, hit 10 3-pointers and led the Tigers with 32 points.

“They couldn’t stop our inside game, and we could stop their 3-pointers,” Brown said.

With Terre Haute South dropping out of the Classic, the Olympians had to face a fresh Southeastern team in the afternoon. The Olympians were within 36-34 after three quarters before the Royals pulled away in the fourth.

Dean added nine points, and Bachmann had seven for East.

“We had a great day,” Brown said. “We were in both games. The second game, the fourth quarter, we just ran out of gas. It’s like cutting the grass where you have a little bit to go, and you run out of gas and you’re standing in the yard. They played their hearts out. We just couldn’t hang on.”

Trinity opens with win

TRAFALGAR — Trinity Lutheran opened its season with a 64-51 win at Indian Creek.

Bailey Tabeling led the Cougars with 31 points. Sydney Jaynes added 18 points and seven rebounds, and Liza Froedge had eight points.
