The Bartholomew County Republican Party has chosen Greg Duke as the new District 2 county councilman. Duke will fill the vacancy left by former councilwoman Laura DeDemonic, who resigned from her seat on Oct. 20.

Fifteen District 2 GOP precinct committeemen were at the vote Wednesday and, in the first ballot, selected Duke to fill the vacancy. His term ends on Dec. 31, 2022. Then, Duke’s seat and the other three district seats on the county council will be up for re-election.

Duke is currently a merit deputy at the Brown County Sheriff’s Department. He is assigned as a school resource officer and is based at Brown County High School, though he also serves other Brown County schools as well.

Before that, he served as a deputy with the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department for more than 20 years and retired in August 2019.

Duke has sought public office in the past; he ran for Bartholomew County Sheriff in 1998 in the primary.

Duke said he became interested in politics because his mother was a precinct committeeman. He became her vice precinct committeeman. He was also involved in Young Republicans, worked as a poll inspector and worked for the highway department in his youth.

In regards to his recent selection, Duke said he’s excited about how the county council is moving toward more long-term planning, particularly in regards to budgeting.

“That would be an innovation that I think everyone would welcome," he said.
