Greiwe notches record in win

Koryn Greiwe

Columbus East junior Koryn Greiwe etched her name into the record books during the Olympians 88-41 girls basketball victory over Orleans Saturday afternoon.

Greiwe finished with 13 assists, breaking the single-game school record set by Alicia Hopkins back in 2011.

“In this game, we were getting defensive rebounds, and getting the outlet, and I was pushing it up court. We were able to finish at the basket,” Greiwe said. “I’m very blessed to have the school record in assists.”

Greiwe also finished with a team-high 19 points and added six rebounds.

“Koryn has just been an all-around player as far as defensively getting a lot of steals this year and leads the team in assists by far. She’s really picked up her rebounding, too. She’s just playing an all-around game,” East coach Danny Brown said. “To break the school record for assists is quite the accomplishment. I’m really proud of that for her. Her floor game has really improved this year. Anytime you get 13 assists in a game, that’s saying something, and she didn’t play the whole game. It’s really quite an accomplishment, and I’m really proud of Koryn.”

Sophomore Maeleigh Roberts was inserted into the starting lineup Saturday. Roberts, who admitted she was a bit nervous when she found out she was starting, didn’t disappoint. She knocked down her first four 3-point attempts to help the Olympians (6-3) build a 17-4 lead midway through the first quarter.

“The nerves were everywhere, but after I hit that first shot, my confidence went up, and I kept hitting them and hitting them,” Roberts said.

Roberts thought in the back of her mind that she was going to start the game when she practiced with the starting five this week. Roberts’ suspicion was correct when Brown told her Friday that she was going to be starting. Roberts finished with 15 points in her first varsity start.

“I’ve been waiting for the right opportunity, and today was the day to put her in the starting lineup,” Brown said. “We got off to a slow start the last couple of games… She’s a knock-down shooter, hitting four in a row and got us off to a really good start, and that was key. She’s deserving of everything she’s got.”

Sheridan Robbins finished with a game-high 21 points for Orleans. Brown is appreciative of the Class A Bulldogs for making the trip all the way to Columbus.

“Orleans had an opportunity to take Loogootee’s place (on the schedule), and they wanted to come up here and test themselves and see how they could do,” Brown said. “We really appreciate and respect Orleans for making that trip and coming up here and playing us. I commend all their players and coaches and their coaching staff back home that couldn’t make it. I really appreciate it, our team and athletic department really appreciates them coming up to play. They have a fine team. Robbins is a heck of a player. She did a nice job, and they all did. Thanks for coming up here and playing us.”
