Two Columbus Signature Academy New Tech seniors are the recipients of the 2021 Lily Endowment Community Scholarships for Bartholomew County

The Heritage Fund — The Community Foundation of Bartholomew County announced that Hayley Barr and Jadi Miller were the recipients in a news release Friday. The scholarship program, which is in its 24th year, is administered statewide by Independent Colleges of Indiana, Inc. and locally by the Heritage Fund.

"Statewide, 143 scholarships were awarded to Indiana students to pursue four years of undergraduate study on a full-time basis that lead to a baccalaureate degree at an accredited public or private nonprofit college or university in Indiana," the release stated. "Barr and Miller will receive full tuition for four years to the Indiana college of their choice and a $900 annual stipend for required books and equipment.”

Barr’s extracurriculars include National Honor Society, school Interact Club and "Student Voice" student publication. She has also volunteered for the Bartholomew County Humane Society, Columbus Animal Care Services and Mill Race Center. Barr plans to major in chemistry and pursue a doctor of veterinary medicine degree.

Miller’s extracurriculars include track and field, National Honor Society and "Student Voice." She has also volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and St. Bartholomew Church. Miller plans to major in education.

Ten finalists were selected out of 54 applications in Bartholomew County for this year’s scholarships. The other finalists were:

  • Marin Wieneke (Columbus East High School)
  • Taylor Hollen (Columbus East High School)
  • Josie Burbrink (Columbus East High School)
  • Gabriela Heredia (Columbus East High School)
  • Brock Burbrink (CSA New Tech High School)
  • Emmaleigh Martin (CSA New Tech High School)
  • Helena Ho (Columbus North High School)
  • Tamara Essex (Hauser Jr.-Sr. High School)

Applicants were evaluated on academic performance, scholastic and community involvement, employment, leadership, financial need, responses to short answer questions and a 450-word essay, two recommendations, and finalist interviews.

To date, 51 Bartholomew County Students have been named Lilly Endowment Community Scholars. There have been 4,912 Indiana high school students who have been awarded the scholarship.

The main purposes of the scholarship program are:

  • To help raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana
  • To increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations can play in their communities
  • To encourage and support Lilly Scholars to interact with each other and with Indiana leaders to improve the quality of life both in local communities and throughout the state
