County says body camera, car camera training will be in March

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Bartholomew County Sheriff deputies will begin training with new body cameras and car cameras in March.

One or more representatives of the manufacturer, AXON Enterprise, Inc. of Scottsdale, Arizona, will arrive in early March for training, Bartholomew County Information Technology director Scott Mayes said.

Selected sheriff department employees will be taught how to install and run the body and car camera system by the AXON representatives, Mayes said. Once that training is completed, work will get underway to install cables and hardware in each patrol vehicle, Mayes said.

In October, 57 body cameras and 54 car cameras arrived in Columbus as part of an $800,000 investment that will be paid over a five-year-period.

During a recent meeting, two elected county officials commented the cameras have been “sitting on a shelf” for four months. Mayes said he sensed an insinuation that no work was being done on the body and car camera project – and said that is not the case.

“This is not anything that we have put off,” Mayes said. “There’s just a lot of work that has to be done.”
