Dogs named CI champs in boys hoops, gymnastics

Columbus North has been declared Conference Indiana champions in two winter sports that saw events canceled because of COVID or weather.

Last week, the Bull Dogs were named conference gymnastics champions after a heavy snow forced the cancelation of the conference meet. North was selected based on its dual-meet victories over the other two conference gymnastics teams, Bloomington North and Bloomington South.

On Wednesday, the Bull Dogs and Bloomington North were declared conference co-champs in boys basketball. Both teams were 3-0 in the conference, but did not play each other or Bloomington South.

“It’s a nice honor,” Columbus North coach Paul Ferguson said. “I think it’s a feather in the cap of our seniors who have certainly worked hard to make this a great season. We wish we could have played all the games that were postponed, but we understand the situation, and we’re trying to make the best of it.”

The Bull Dogs, who were in quarantine the past two weeks, resumed practice on Monday and will play Bloomington North in the first round of the Bloomington South Sectional on Tuesday.

While the All-Conference boys basketball team has yet to be determined, the three conference gymnastics coaches picked their All-Conference squad. Columbus North juniors Emily Moore and Madi Edwards and sophomore Lindsey Mullis made the team in all four events and the all-around, and junior Abby Jacobi made it on the beam.

“We obviously would have rather had the meet and competed, but due to weather and other complications, we couldn’t make it happen,” Columbus North coach Betsy Warble said.

Morrill headed to UIndy

Columbus East senior Sam Morrill has committed to continue his wrestling career at University of Indianapolis.

Morrill finished second in the state at 170 pounds on Saturday. He won Hoosier Hills Conference, sectional, regional and semistate titles and finished with a record of 38-2.

Morrill plans to sign his letter-of-intent on March 7 at Mill Race Center.

Locals named All-HHC

Three members of the Hoosier Hills Conference champion Columbus East girls basketball team have been named to the All-HHC squad, and East’s Danny Brown is the HHC Coach of the Year.

East junior Koryn Greiwe and sophomores Leah Bachmann and Saige Stahl are on the first team, along with Jennings County freshman Juliann Woodard and senior Addyson Kent. East sophomore Gabby Dean and Jennings junior Lily Ernstes made honorable mention.

Coaches earn honors

Two local girls basketball coaches have been named Hoosier Basketball Coaches Association Coaches of the Year in their respective districts.

Kristi Sigler, who led Jennings County to a 16-7 record and a runner-up finish in the HHC, is the District 3 Coach of the Year. Mike Lang, who led Trinity Lutheran to a 20-5 record and a sectional title, is the District 4 Coach of the Year.
