BASEBALL

North rallies for win

ST. LEON — Class 4A No. 2 Columbus North rallied from a 7-2 deficit after three innings to post a 12-10 win at East Central.

The Bull Dogs (3-0-1) took a 10-7 lead in the middle of the sixth, but the Trojans scored three times in the bottom of the inning to tie it. North then plated a pair of runs in the seventh to pull out the win.

Kyler McIntosh went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and Reese Harmon and Blake Huffman each went 2 for 4 for the Bull Dogs, who matched East Central with nine hits. Austin Bode added a double and two RBIs.

Jacob Bailey picked up the win in relief of Luke Harmon. Will Baker pitched the seventh to earn the save.

GIRLS TENNIS

North opens with win

No. 3 Columbus North opened its season with a 3-2 win against No. 13 Center Grove.

Ashlie Wilson beat Ashlee Fisk 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, and Kathryn Wilson blanked Sonya Vyas 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles for the Bull Dogs. Jaline Tay and Tiffany Fu downed Sydney Plowman and Sarna Vyas 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles.

North’s Arya Gotoh fell to Deepthi Sankaranaratanan 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. Leah George and Sydney Cooper lost to Lauren Dick and Hudson Gilstorf 7-5, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

East blanks Edinburgh

Columbus East picked up its first win of the season, a 5-0 victory against Edinburgh.

Ayano Nomura beat Annelise Lollar 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Cathrine Millwood topped Bethany Burton 4-6, 6-1, (10-5) at No. 2 singles and Katie Hong downed Jessica Walsh 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles for the Olympians (1-1).

East’s Shruthika Kumar and Cassidy Schunr beat Peyton Bryant and Alyssa Funkhouser 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. Monica Burton and Katey Rieckers topped Gracie Myers and Zoey Sida of the Lancers (0-2) 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.

Panthers top Jets

HOPE — Jennings County opened its season with a 4-1 win at Hauser.

Reagan Brown beat Andie Clark 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and Tatum Brown topped Kaitlynn Everroad 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles for the Panthers. Jennings’ Sydney Carson and Liz Ertel downed Aunaka Wasil and Emily Harker 7-6 (9), 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, and Carmen Kopitzke and Cassidy Mull beat Gabby Johns and Charlie Clark 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.

The win for the Jets (0-2) came at No. 3 singles, where Bella Kilps beat Faith Heaton 6-4, 6-0.

Rebels top Trinity

SEYMOUR — Trinity Lutheran opened its season with a 4-1 loss to Southwestern (Hanover)

Sarah Lemming beat Ellie Ford 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles for the Cougars.

Trinity’s Reagan Cain fell to Julie Worcester 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, and Erin Enzinger lost to Audrey Bave 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Katelyn Mensendiek and Kiley Zabel fell to Autumn Harmon and Alliana Voorhies 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, and Rebekah Brown and Drew Hubbard lost to Syernia Hardy and Autumn Gross 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

North sweeps Panthers

BLOOMINGTON — Columbus North opened its season with a sweep at Bloomington South. The Bull Dogs won the boys meet 95-28 and the girls meet 70-62.

Tucker Smith broke his own school record with a winning throw of 65 feet, 5 inches in the shot put. Other winners for the North boys were Lwazi Midwanazi in the high jump (5-8), Bryant Trinkle in the long jump (19-10 1/2), David Sandusky in the discus (154-11), Marquis Mixon in the 100 meters (11.63 seconds), Reese Kilbarger-Stumpff in the 1,600 (4:34.68), Clayton Guthrie in the 800 (2:06.00), Alex Narvaez in the 200 (24.17) and Austin Pulkowski in the 3,200 (9:46.45). The Bull Dogs also won the 4×800 (8:30.76) and 4×100 (45.13) relays.

Emily Herndon led the North girls with wins in the shot (40-9) and discus (112-2). Sasha Goodlow took the high jump (5-0), Mackenzie Barnett captured the 1,600 (5:13.22) and Lily Baker won the 800 (2:25.04). The Bull Dogs also took the 4×800 (10:02.62) and 4×100 (52.64) relays.

Bull Dogs down Braves

Luke Schneider fired an even-par 35 to win medalist honors and lead No. 6 Columbus North to a 149-195 win against Brownstown Central at Harrison Lake Country Club.

Luke VanDeventer and Jacob Niedbalski each shot 37 for the Bull Dogs. Jack Schiavello carded a 40, Tyler Wilks added a 41 and Willy Davis had a 42.

Panthers finish second

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County finished second in a tri match at St. Anne’s Greensburg won with a 178 to 181 for the Panthers and 182 for North Decatur.

Brett Silvey led Jennings with a 42. Chad Gasper carded a 43, Jake Grider added a 47, Jack George shot 49 and Tanner Stearns had a 52.

Trinity takes second

SEYMOUR — Jacob Sabotin carded a 41 to win medalist honors and lead Trinity Lutheran to a second-place finish in quad match win at Shadowood.

Austin won with a 173 to 196 for the Cougars and 210 for Salem. Clarksville did not have a full team.

Caleb Williams added a 49 for Trinity. Kade Hill shot 51, and Zephyr Wilson had a 55.

SOFTBALL

North takes first loss

INDIANAPOLIS — Class 4A co-No. 2 Roncalli handed Columbus North its first loss of the season, an 8-2 defeat.

Trailing 4-0, the Bull Dogs (2-1) scored twice in the sixth to cut the lead in half, but the Royals scored four times in the bottom of the sixth. Roncalli outhit North 7-3.

East falls to Braves

Columbus East matched Brownstown Central with seven hits, but the Braves took advantage of three errors to claim an 8-2 victory.

Kenzie Foster went 2 for 4 with a double and a triple for the Olympians (2-3). Kaitlin Brummett and Julia Sitterding each went 2 for 4.

Lancers rout Twisters

EDINBURGH — Edinburgh scored three times in the first and 11 more in the second on its way to a 19-1, five-inning win against Oldenburg Academy.

Alix Streeval went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, Kyah Streeval and Catey Streeval each went 2 for 2 with two RBIs and Gracie Crawhorn went 2 for 2 for the Lancers (2-2). MacKenzie Bieker had three RBIs and combined with Crawhorn combined on a three-hitter.

T-Birds edge Eagles

NASHVILLE — Brown County scored six runs in the seventh, but came up just short in an 8-7 loss to Eastern Greene.

Savannah Oden went 2 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs, and Ally Hash went 2 for 3 for the Eagles (0-3). Kailey Buccos had a double and two RBIs.
