Mill Race Marathon medal ribbons to feature Bicentennial celebration

COLUMBUS, Ind. — The medals designed for this year’s Mill Race Marathon on Sept. 25 could become historical keepsakes for decades to come.

While the design of the medals isn’t changed, the newly-designed ribbons will commemorate this year’s Bicentennial for Columbus and Bartholomew County, planning committee director Laura Dudukovich said.

Since late last year, marathon organizers have been working closely with a number of local officials that include Mary Ferdon, the city’s executive director of administration and community development, and Erin Hawkins, marketing director for the Columbus Area Visitors Center, Dudukovich said.

Discussions have included proposals on how this fall’s marathon can assist the town and county in observing and celebrating the 200th birthday, she said.

After a decision was made to utilize the ribbon to feature the historical commemoration, planning committee member Dave Venable went to the Bartholomew County Historical Society to research several images kept in their archives, according to marathon director Randy Stafford.

Once all the photos and artwork were laid out, Venable came up with designs that blended rural and urban images from the past, Stafford said.
