Club Olympia, Donner compete in Summer Slam meet

Club Olympia Swim Team and Donner Swim Club competed last weekend in the Franklin Regional Swim Team (FRST) Early Summer Slam.

This was one of the first major long course (50-meter pool length) club meets in Indiana in nearly a year due to COVID. Fourteen teams and nearly 500 swimmers from Indiana, Illinois and Ohio competed.

Club Olympia, with 21 of 28 swimmers scoring, racked up nearly 1,300 points and placed fourth overall behind the host team from Franklin and much larger teams from Fishers and Fort Wayne.

Leading the way for Club Olympia were Ashley Freel (138 points), Brady Beyer (128), Connelly Furnish (126.5), Hope Westphal (123), Tony Machavariani (119) and Maggie Johnson (107).

In the 15-and-over Open Division, Freel had seven top-five finishes in eight events, including wins in the 200 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 100 freestyle. Beyer claimed wins in the 200 butterly and 100 breaststroke with seven top-five finishes.

Johnson claimed six top five finishes in eight events. Cole Ehara, Annie Murer and Dathan Wolf all claimed podium finishes in the Open Division.

In the 13-14 age division, Westphal claimed six top-five finishes with a win in the 200 butterfly. Todd Hundley claimed a top-five finish in the 200 backstroke and three top-10 finishes. Micha Machavariani had five top-six finishes in his six events. Ethan Hall claimed two top-10 finishes. Cassidy Furnish scored in her events. Ty Maher, competing in his first meet with Club Olympia as an unattached swimmer, achieved two top-20 finishes.

In the 11-12 division Connelly Furnish claimed seven top-five finishes in eight events, including wins in the 50 breaststroke and 100 breaststroke. Zoie Chandelkar claimed five podium finishes. Josh Pendleton podium finished in five of six events with top-five swims in the 200 individual medley and 400 freestyle. Sanaa Kulkarni claimed two podiums and three top-10s overall. Lovely Panda scored in her events.

The 10U age group was led Tony Machavariani and Shreyan Kulkarni. Machavariani claimed top-10 finishes in all eight events, including five top-five finishes and a best finish of second in the 100 butterfly and 200 IM. Kulkarni also claimed top 10 finishes in all eight events, including top-five finishes in the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle. Aashka and Vivan Shaw combined for 36 points,  while Lily Pendleton and Ivanka Chandelkar both scored in their events.

Donner swimmers earn divisional cuts

Twenty-five swimmers from Donner Swim Club competed in the FRST Early Summer Slam, and over the course of the three-day meet, its swimmers raced to 40 new divisional cuts.

In the 10-and-under age group, Rajvi Sapkal finished 10th in the 100 backstroke and had eight top-14 finishes. Caroline Crawford had six top-16 finishes.

In the 11-12 division, Abby Proffitt placed fourth in the 50 breaststroke, sixth in 100 freestyle, seventh in the 500 freestyle and had eight top-16 finishes. Mridula Muthukumaran finished seventh in the 50 backstroke, eighth in the 100 freestyle and had seven top-16s. Kanav Mehta netted two top-16s. Nitya Garg and Levi Bense each had six top-16s. Cora Tregoning had one top-16 finish.

In the 13-14 division, Aarush Mahato finished eighth in the 200 butterfly.

In the Men’s Open division, Brock Smith placed sixth in the 200 butterfly, and Carlos Fabian was eighth in the 100 butterfly and 10th in the 100 backstroke.

BBJ athletes win medals at Area 2

Thirteen Bartholomew Brown Jennings (BBJ) Special Olympics athletes won medals in last weekend’s Area 2 Spring Games at Salem High School.

Four athletes captured three gold medals. Josh Holley won his division in the 1,500 meters, 800 and 400. Ashley Hopkins and Chaz Rothrock each took their divisions in the 100, 200 and shot put. Todd Smith captured the 100, 400 run/walk and softball throw.

Lexie Gotoh won gold medals in the women’s 1500 and 800 and a silver in the men’s division 400. Hannah Hart took gold in the 200 and the 400 run/walk and bronze in the softball throw.

Josh Beals won gold in the softball throw and silver in the 50 and 100. Sarah Hahn won gold in the softball throw and silver in the 50 and the 400 run/walk. Jason Sprague won gold in the 200, silver in the 100 and bronze in the shot put.

Joe Cox won silver in the 400 run/walk and softball throw, and Bronze Medal in the 50. Amanda Hamm won silver Medal in the 50 and bronze in the 400 run/walk and the softball throw.

Becca Hunnicutt won silver in the 400 run/walk and bronze in the softball throw and finished fourth in the 50.  Jacob Taylor won silver in the 100 and bronze in the 200 and took fifth in the shot put.
