COLUMBUS, Ind. — Ever since Columbus North senior Caleb Shinkle started gymnastics when he was 7 years old, he has hoped to compete on the national stage.

Shinkle will have his wish granted when he competes in the Men’s Gymnastics National Championships that runs Wednesday through Sunday in Daytona Beach, Florida.

“It’s pretty exciting,” Shinkle said. “Anytime I travel for gymnastics, it’s a lot of fun.”

Shinkle competes for the Indiana Gymnastics Center, which is based in Whiteland. Shinkle said if he does compete for the team, he’ll still compete as individual in the all-around in the 17-19-year-old age group. He competes as a Level 10 gymnast, which is the highest ranking in the Junior program.

Shinkle said there is a one-day qualifying event, and whose who score is high enough on each event can qualify for the all-around or the individual finals. The six apparatuses in men’s gymnastics include floor, pommel horse, still rings, vault, parallel bars and high bar.
