ISP investigating inmate death at Bartholomew County Jail

COLUMBUS — The Indiana State Police are investigating the death of an inmate at the Bartholomew County Jail.

The investigation began shortly after 6 p.m. when a male inmate was found unresponsive in the jail, said Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, Indiana State Police spokesman.  The inmate was provided with medical care and transported to Columbus Regional Hospital where he was then pronounced deceased.

Detectives from the Indiana State Police-Versailles Post were requested to lead the investigation which is normal practice when a death occurs inside a correctional facility.

The inmate has been identified as Gregory A. Leonard, 47, Columbus.  Leonard’s family has been notified.

At this time, the investigation is ongoing.  Due to the investigation being conducted by Indiana State Police detectives, the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department will not be commenting on the case.
