McDaniel to play 2 sports at Hanover

Hayden McDaniel gave up football after his freshman year to focus on baseball, but returned to the gridiron as a senior.

Now, after helping Columbus North win Conference Indiana titles in both football and baseball, McDaniel plays to play both sports in college. He recently committed to become a two-sport athlete at Hanover.

Last fall, McDaniel caught 10 passes for 203 yards and tied for the team lead with four touchdown receptions. This spring, he had 12 RBIs and 16 runs scored to help the Bull Dogs to a sectional title.

Montgomery named NFF Scholar-Athlete

Columbus North senior J.J. Montgomery has been chosen as a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete. He was one of 15 players from around the state honored at a banquet on Sunday.

Montgomery, a senior offensive tackle, led an offensive line that paved the way for 2,438 rushing and 1,275 passing yards this season. He earned All-Conference Indiana and All-Region honors and helped the Bull Dogs to a 6-3 record and a conference championship.

Montgomery, who graduated with a 3.99 GPA, plans to continue his career at Marian University.

North’s Tay makes Academic All-State

Columbus North senior Jaline Tay has been named to the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association Academic All-State team.

Tay teamed with Tiffany Fu to go 16-5 at No. 1 doubles this season in helping the Bull Dogs to a 20-3 record and conference, sectional and regional titles.

Bull Dogs announce track and field awards

Junior Reese Kilbarger-Stumpff and senior Mackenzie Barnett are Columbus North’s Track MVPs, and junior Tucker Smith and senior Emily Herndon are the Bull Dogs’ Boys and Girls Field MVPs.

Austin Pulkowski and Andy Stohr won the boys Bull Dog Awards. Liam Phillips was selected Most Improved.

Lily Baker, Sasha Goodlow, Helena Ho, Ella Meek and Brianna Newell won the girls Bull Dog Awards. Helen Alderfer and Katherine Rumsey were named Most Improved.

Major selected East baseball MVP

Senior Ben Major has been voted by the East baseball team as its MVP.

Major also won the Lou Giovanini Leadership Award and was honored, along with Parker Harrison, as team captains. Kaden Wise was the Quality At-Bat Champion, and Jose Martinez won the Jay Lemmon Everyday Award.

Caleb Martoccia and Chase Niese won the JV and Freshman MVP awards. Parker Harris and Jacob Dettmer won the JV and Freshman Mental Attitude Awards.

Bayne named North Unified track MVP

Gavin Bayne has been selected MVP of Columbus North’s Unified track and field team.

Jenna Lang won the Bull Dog Award.

Engelbert leaving for position at Waldron

Alex Engelbert, who has been the athletics director at Central Middle School, has taken a position as assistant principal and athletics director at Waldron High School.

Engelbert also had been JV baseball coach at Columbus North this spring.

East’s Greiwe to host free-throw clinic

Columbus East incoming senior and three-time Republic Girls Basketball Player of the Year Koryn Greiwe will be putting on a free free-throw clinic for incoming second-through-eighth-grade boys and girls Wednesday at East High School.

The clinic will be from 2 to 3:30 p.m. for incoming second-through-fourth graders and from 4 to 5:30 p.m. for incoming fifth-through-eighth-graders. T-shirts will be sold for $12 (or two for $20) to raise money for Foundation For Youth’s athletic programs.

North girls holding free Youth Soccer Skills Camp

The Columbus North girls soccer team is holding a free Youth Soccer Skills Camp. The camp continues from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and July 7 and 14 at the new BCSC Soccer Complex for girls ages 7 to 13.

Each session will focus on individual skill development through small-sided activities. Players will be coached by current and past North players.
