UPDATED: DNR recovers body of 17-year-old from Tipton Lake swimming area

COLUMBUS, Ind – The Bartholomew County Coroner’s Office is investigating the drowning
death of a young man who was swimming with friends at Tipton Lakes on the west side of
Columbus Saturday evening.

According to Coroner Clayton Nolting, 17-year-old Tyrell D. Bowers of Columbus went underwater before the Bartholomew County Emergency Operations Center received a 911 call at 9:54 p.m. Emergency responders from multiple agencies responded to the scene and Bowers was located at 11:24 PM. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Nolting. An autopsy was scheduled for Sunday.

Indiana Department of Natural Resources is also investigating the drowning.

ORIGINAL STORY

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Indiana Conservation Officers have recovered the body of 17-year-old male from Tipton Lake.

At approximately 10 p.m. Saturday, emergency responders were dispatched to the Tipton Lake swimming area for a subject that went under the water and never resurfaced.

A short time later, the victim was recovered in approximately 12 feet of water near a swimming platform.

The investigation is ongoing, and an exact cause of death is pending autopsy results.

Agencies assisting with the recovery include Indiana Conservation Officers, Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department, Columbus Police Department, Columbus Township Fire, Columbus Fire, Columbus Regional Hospital medics.
