By ARTHUR I. CYR - Pakistan's National Assembly elections on May 11 provided a significant victory to Nawaz Sharif and his Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party. Despite violence, turnout was approximately 60 percent. A peaceful power transition from the governing Pakistan People's Party (PPP) to this opposition party means progress from the nation's history of military coups. Sharif and his chief political rival, Imran Khan, have pledged to work together.

When it comes to Afghanistan's independence and stability, "the first challenge is corruption," Bernard Bajolet, France's outgoing ambassador to that country, said Monday as he prepared to return to Paris for another post. - Diplomats are generally paid to be discreet, polished and smooth -- in short, diplomatic. Bajolet, in contrast, is blunt, saying that most of those governing Afghanistan do not believe in their own country's future.
