BROWNSTOWN — A Vallonia man died and his wife was injured Wednesday night when their motorcycle struck a tree limb that had fallen onto a state road south of Brownstown.
Larry Thomas, 44, was killed in the wreck, reported at 10:12 p.m. Wednesday on State Road 135 about a mile south of Brownstown near County Road 150W, Officer Adam Nicholson said.
His body was then struck by a northbound vehicle, police said.
An autopsy conducted Thursday morning, however, showed Thomas died from head and neck injuries from the initial impact with the tree limb, Jackson County Coroner Roger Wheeler said.
Wheeler had pronounced Thomas dead at the scene.
Thomas’ wife, Marjorie Thomas, 51, was injured and treated by Jackson County Emergency Medical Service personnel before being taken to the sheriff’s department in Brownstown. She was then flown to University of Louisville Hospital in Kentucky for treatment with what Nicholson said appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.
“She had scrapes, and there was concern about possible head injuries,” Nicholson said of Marjorie Thomas’ injuries.
She was in serious but stable condition Thursday morning, Wheeler said. He added that she also was being treated for abdominal injuries.
Larry Thomas was driving south when his 2006 silver Suzuki motorcycle struck a tree limb that had fallen onto State Road 135, Nicholson said. Both he and his wife were ejected from the motorcycle.
“The limb had fallen from a tree near the road,” Nicholson said. “It was a pretty good-sized limb, 14 or 15 inches. The tree was on the west side of the road.”
Soon afterward, a tan 2003 Ford Focus that was traveling north on State Road 135 struck Larry Thomas, whose body was partially in the northbound lane, police said.
The Focus was driven by a 30-year-old Salem resident who was not injured, Nicholson said.
“He was on his way to work,” Nicholson said. “He was pretty shook up. It’s an unfortunate thing for him to have to deal with.”
The section of State Road 135 is straight and not a common area to have wrecks reported, Nicholson said.
The accident remains under investigation by Nicholson and Detective Bob Lucas.
Assisting at the scene were sheriff’s department detectives Rick Blaker Jr. and Bob Lucas, deputies Jeff Walters and Rick Meyer, and Brownstown officers Steve Scarlett, John Reichenbacker and Mitch Ray.
Brownstown Fire Department volunteers also assisted at the scene.
