HOPE — Two Columbus men were flown by a Lifeline helicopter to an Indianapolis hospital following a two-vehicle crash near Hope that left one in critical condition.
At approximately 5:35 a.m. Saturday, Devan Sparks, 20, Columbus, was driving a red 2000 Ford Mustang eastbound on County Road 450N, said Maj. Todd Noblitt, spokesman for the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department. Trevin Colglazier, 21, Columbus, was the passenger in the front seat, and Michael Fraley, 20, Columbus, was the passenger in the back seat.
A preliminary investigation indicated that Sparks disregarded the stop sign on County Road 450N at the intersection with State Road 9, and drove onto State Road 9 where the Mustang struck the front right end of a 2000 GMC Jimmy driven by Tyler Hadley, 25, Hope, Noblitt said.
The impact caused both vehicles to skid off the roadway and strike a mound of snow and ice, and the vehicles became airborne, Noblitt said. The GMC rolled over but came to rest upright about 90 feet from the roadway. The Mustang came to rest upside down.
Fraley was transported from the scene by Lifeline to IU Health Methodist Hospital because of a possible head injury. He is in critical condition, said Gene Ford, spokesman for IU Health.
Colglazier was first taken to CRH but later transported by Lifeline to Methodist. He is in good condition, Ford said.
Sparks was transported to CRH. Sparks couldn't remember details of the impact at the scene, Noblitt said.
Hadley also was transported to CRH.
Noblitt said the investigation is ongoing an no citations have been issued yet.
