3-way race for House District 57

Republican Sean Eberhart said he would sponsor and support legislation that enhances Indiana’s business climate if he is re-elected as the District 57 state representative.

Two challengers want to deny him that chance.

Democrat Todd Day and Libertarian Paul Bravard are trying to prevent a fourth consecutive term for Eberhart.

District 57 includes all of Shelby County, eastern Bartholomew County and the western half of Sugar Creek Township in Hancock County.

Besides his desire to sponsor legislation in the next Indiana General Assembly that helps businesses, Eberhart, who owns a tool-rental store, wants the state to adopt a balanced budget with no tax increases.

“I rely on four core principles when considering legislation: personal responsibility, limited government, fiscal responsibility and individual freedom,” Eberhart said. “Each of us should take care of ourselves and rely on the government for only basic needs. The government should be limited in scope and avoid regulation where possible.”

Day, a design engineer, said he would not introduce any legislation.

“I am more interested in repealing legislation,” Day said.

For example, Day said he wants to repeal the right-to-work law, the smoking ban and casino and online gambling restrictions.

Like Eberhart, Bravard’s legislative focus would involve businesses.

“To stimulate jobs we need to concentrate on the areas in Indiana that provide the jobs: small businesses, agriculture and manufacturing. We need to remove the barricades put in place to favor a select few and promote entrepreneurship,” said Bravard, a network and systems administrator.

Reducing taxes on farmers and encouraging manufacturing companies to stay in Indiana also are important, Bravard said.

Tackling social issues would not be a priority for Eberhart or Day.

“Protection of civil liberties and equality are essential in a free society. However, social/cultural issues shouldn’t be decided by government,” Day said.

Social issues should not be the focus of the legislature for the next two years, Eberhart said. “Jobs and the economy should be the priority,” he said.

Bravard, however, would like to address some social issues if elected the District 57 representative.

“I am concerned with promoting a high-quality foster care system and finding quality foster parents to support this system — children are our future, which is one way Indiana can build a better future,” he said.

He’d also like to repeal the state’s smoking ban because he believes it impedes individual liberties.

Eberhart said his 16 years as a small-business owner makes him the best candidate for the job.

“I know what is required to maintain a positive business climate,” he said. “Our economy and job creation should be the state’s top priority. During my first six years in the legislature, Indiana has become a national leader in business climate with our state at the top of the list when companies are looking to expand or relocate.”

Day said the fact that he’s not a politician gives him an edge over the other candidates.

“I will honestly and faithfully fulfill my oath of office. I will do what’s best for Indiana and its citizens,” Day said.

Bravard echoed Day’s statement about being a nontraditional candidate.

“I am content with life and do not campaign for this job to seek fame or personal gratification,” Bravard said. “I am campaigning for this job to represent the people of my community and their interests and well-being.”
