The Columbus Service League awarded 10 scholarships worth a total of $6,600 during a ceremony that recognized 181 of the county’s brightest high school seniors.

Students with a cumulative 9.0 grade-point average at the end of their junior year were invited to the event Sept. 17 at the Grand Ballroom of the Clarion Hotel, 2480 W. Jonathan Moore Pike.

Columbus Service League organized the Youth Leadership Bartholomew County program in cooperation with the Columbus Rotary Club. About 400 students and parents attended the event, which began about 28 years ago.

Each candidate had to submit a resume of high school accomplishments, a short essay about leadership and interview with a professional. Combined scores determined the winners.

Columbus resident Jennifer Hooker Brinegar, who swam in the 1976 Olympics and continued as a member of the U.S. National team until 1979, spoke at the event about the value of leadership and of being part of a team when she was a swimmer.
