What distinguishes you from your opponent?

Karen Aud

I know what it takes to run the entire office of county clerk. The knowledge of operations I have obtained over the years is crucial. My life experiences have helped me develop the compassion and patience often needed to be an effective leader to staff and a servant to the public.

Jay Phelps

We just have different ideas and visions for the future of the clerk’s office. I want to use my technological skills to move the office forward into the 21st century. I don’t want to just sit at a desk; I want to make a difference in the lives of the employees, customers, voters and the taxpayers.

What do you see as the role of the Bartholomew County clerk?

Karen Aud

The clerk is the administrator of the judicial system. We work with the court staff to carry out the orders of the judges. The clerk's office serves as the recipient of all court fees, judgments and child-support payments. The clerk is also the administrator of all elections and maintains the voter-registration records.

Jay Phelps

The clerk’s office is the custodian of court records and it is vital that we maintain the posterity, accuracy and accessibility of these court documents. The county clerk serves as the chief elections officer of the county (and) it is very crucial that we continue to make sure that our voter rolls are 100 percent accurate.

Are there any changes, improvements that you would like to see in the clerk’s office?

Karen Aud

There is always room for betterment and growth. I would like to lead the staff in taking customer service to a higher level. I also see a need for written standard operating procedures for the many tasks of our departments. I look forward to overseeing the initial year for vote centers in Bartholomew County.

Jay Phelps

One of the biggest changes is the implementation of vote centers (and) I have the knowledge and expertise to successfully implement it in Bartholomew County. I will always be looking for ways to improve our service to the community, such as cross training of employees, to allow the office to be more effective and efficient.
