An early morning attic fire caused more than $100,000 in damage to a century-old farmhouse, officials said.
The house, located at 11678 E. State Road 46 near Shiloh Baptist Church, is owned by Nathan and Debbie Arnholt. The fire alarm was received at 3:48 a.m. Thursday.
“It pretty much burnt off the house and damaged the second floor. There was also a lot of water damage to the second floor and the main floor,” said Dave Thompson, public information officer with Columbus Township Fire and Rescue.
There were no injuries. Cause of the fire is still unclear, Thompson said.
The main blaze was contained within 45 minutes, but firefighters worked until daylight to cool hot spots blistering what was left of the home’s attic and upper floor, Thompson said.
He estimated that the 100-year-old farm house was at least 2,500 square feet in size with wood frame construction and a shingle roof.
“Our crews made a quick and effective knockdown of the fire, but construction of the home with multiple attic spaces and plaster and lathe ceilings made it difficult to get to all the hot spots,” he said. “Manpower had to be called out from several departments to fight the blaze.”
Columbus Township Fire and Rescue was assisted by firefighters from Wayne Township, Clay Township and Westport fire departments, and the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department.
Firefighters were on the scene about four hours.
The Arnholts’ insurance company dispatched a home-restoration company with trailers to the scene early Thursday and much of the furniture on the property’s main floor was saved, Thompson said.
Firefighters had placed tarps over the Arnholts’ belongings as best they could, and that helped salvage many of their furnishings.
Thompson said furniture was taken from the house and stored temporarily in trailers supplied by the restoration workers.
