COLUMBUS, Ind. — A blood drive in honor of fallen police officers will have donation sites in Bartholomew and surrounding counties throughout June.
The Indiana Fallen Officers Blood Drive is scheduled to be at the Senior Citizens Center, 515 Buckeye St. in North Vernon, from noon to 4 p.m. on Tuesday and at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour from 8 a.m. to noon June 7.
It will be at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 209 W. Washington St. in Greensburg, from 2 to 6 p.m. June 19, and at Columbus Regional Hospital from noon to 5 p.m. June 27. An additional tentative collection time at Columbus Regional Hospital is scheduled for 7 a.m. to noon June 27.
The blood drive was started by Janice Starnes, wife of Morgan County Sheriff's Sgt. Dan R. Starnes, after her husband died July 10, 2001, as a result of gunshot wounds he sustained in the line of duty during a gun battle with a burglary suspect four weeks earlier.
In 2007, Janice Starnes took the blood drive state wide. The drive has donation sites in nearly every county in the state this year.
The blood donated during the drive is not specifically for wounded police officers. It will be held in blood banks across the state and will be used for any person in need of blood or blood products.
