Blue lights on bridge to honor fallen officers

Follow The Republic:

The lights on the Robert N. Stewart Bridge in Columbus will be blue this weekend in memory of police officers who died in the line of duty in Indianapolis, Gary and Tipton, the city announced Friday.

Blue is the color used by law enforcement to commemorate fallen officers.

Tipton County Sheriff’s Deputy Jake Calvin was killed June 28 when his patrol car left the roadway and rolled several times while responding to a traffic accident.

Officer Perry Renn, a 22-year veteran of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, was killed Saturday in a shootout with a suspect.

Officer Jeffrey Westerfield, a 19-year veteran of the Gary Police Department, was killed Sunday while responding to a call.

The Columbus Police Department Honor Guard represented the city at Calvin’s funeral Monday. The Honor Guard attended Renn’s funeral Friday and will attend Westerfield’s funeral Monday.
