A little more than a decade ago, local residents Joe Wright and Jackie Combest introduced bluegrass to the Columbus music scene.

Having performed together across southern Indiana for eight years, the pair found they were regularly drawing crowds of 100 or more. It was time to bring the music home, and they formally brought the southern sound to Columbus in 2002.

Local residents are invited to the Columbus Bluegrass Jamboree at 5 p.m. Saturday at Donner Center. The free event is sponsored by Lincoln-Central Neighborhood Family Center, Columbus Parks and Recreation and the Columbus Area Arts Council.

Bands performing include Blossom Creek, New Balance, Friends of Bluegrass, Cumberland Gap and Grandview Junction. Each band will play for about 45 minutes.

“People can expect good, down-to-earth music,” jamboree co-host Combest said.

If local musicians are interested in a little pickin’ and grinnin’ themselves, Wright invites them to participate in the free jam session before the show.

“From 4 to 5 p.m. anyone can join in,” Wright said. “They just need to bring an acoustic instrument.”

According to Combest, as many as 30 people have participated in past jam sessions.

“Participants have ranged in age from 8 to 80 years old,” Combest said. “We form a circle, and we don’t care if you’re bad or good. When it comes your turn, you get an opportunity to perform.”

The Columbus Bluegrass Jamboree is a great opportunity to hear local bluegrass groups, said Diane Doup, outreach coordinator of the Lincoln-Central Neighborhood Family Center.

“They’re a wonderful mix of talented musicians,” Doup said. “We have so many talented musicians in Columbus, and this is just another way to spotlight them.”

Donations are welcome. Concessions will be available for purchase.
