A 15-year-old male Columbus high school student is recovering from head injuries at an Indianapolis hospital after he was struck by a vehicle Wednesday.
Gabriel W. Halstead, 2648 Sycamore St., was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital following an 11:49 a.m. accident at Hawcreek Avenue and 25th Street. He then was transferred to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health and was listed in fair condition late Thursday morning, spokeswoman Lori Ewoldt said.
Halstead attends classes at the Columbus Signature Academy — New Tech campus on 25th Street.
Witnesses told emergency responders Halstead was attempting to catch up with a group of students who were crossing at a marked crosswalk when the traffic light changed, Columbus Fire Department spokesman Capt. Mike Wilson said.
After Halstead walked behind an eastbound vehicle, he was struck by a Toyota SUV, driven by Troy J. Staggs, 28, of Hartsville, Columbus Police spokesman Lt. Matt Myers said.
Staggs told police he was accelerating from the traffic signal when the teen walked in front his vehicle, Wilson said.
Don't settle for a preview.
