Summer Spencer, a seventh-grader at Northside Middle School, will join more than 500 junior high and high school cheerleaders and dancers today at the 92nd annual Thanksgiving Day Parade in Philadelphia.

Parade participants are selected by way of Varsity camps around the country. Varsity, founded in 1974, is known for its educational camps, clinics and competitions and is considered a driving force in cheerleading, according to its website.

The site says the top-12 percent of cheerleaders and dancers who attend Varsity camps earn the chance to perform in the event, which is the oldest Thanksgiving parade in the country.
