The intersection at Fifth and Jackson streets will be closed during Saturday’s Mill Race Marathon — a new addition to the list of street closings during the event.
The Board of Public Works and Safety on Tuesday approved the request to close Jackson from the north edge of the entrance to the Fourth Street parking garage to the north side of the Fifth Street intersection. Vehicles that need access to the alley between the garage and Washington Street will be given directions.
The closure will be to protect pedestrians during the marathon, said Aimee Morris with the city engineers’ office.
The complete list of street closings is available on the city’s website: columbus.in.gov/news/mill-race-marathon-routes-and-road-closings/
In other marathon updates during Tuesday’s Board of Works meeting:
City street crews are doing last-minute checks of the marathon route for any potholes that need to be filled, said Bryan Burton, manager of the city garage. Crews also have been sweeping and cleaning the route, he said.
ColumBUS will not begin running routes Saturday until 3 p.m. because of the marathon delays and closures, Burton said.
Several parks and recreation events will be open to the public Saturday, including a variety show from 7 to 9 p.m. at Donner Park shelterhouse, a drive-in movie showing of “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” at 7 p.m. at Mill Race Park and the fourth annual Ice Skating Extravaganza at Hamilton Center Ice Arena and Lincoln Park from 2 to 4 p.m.
Mayor Kristen Brown praised all of the city departments taking part in marathon preparations, calling the city an “unbilled partner” in the event.
