City interviewing for parks director opening

Follow The Republic:

City officials are interviewing candidates to lead the city Parks and Recreation Department.

City attorney Jeff Logston said at Thursday’s parks board meeting that there could be a decision soon on a permanent replacement for Ben Wagner, who was demoted to marketing coordinator and then resigned from the department effective May 30.

Mayor Kristen Brown said Wagner failed to put a system in place that would have detected that Snappy Tomato Pizza, then a Commons tenant, failed to pay rent for all of 2013. The restaurant was informed Dec. 23 that it owed $27,237.52 in monthly payments, additional lease obligations and late payments for all of 2013. Brown also said Wagner improperly used parks department credit cards and did not have a plan to deal with a backlog in parks maintenance. Wagner denied those allegations.
