Columbus East ended its season, finishing 18th on Saturday in Class A competition during the Class A Indiana High School Color Guard Association state finals.

The competitive activity combines rifle tossing and flag spinning with synchronized movement and flexibility.

Columbus East had advanced to the finals at Center Grove High School by being among the top 16 finishers in preliminary competition at Decatur Central High School, placing fourth.

The last time East’s winter guard made an appearance in the state finals was in 2012, when the team placed 15th.

This year’s East squad consisted of two seniors, five juniors, one sophomore and four freshmen.

The team was led by color and winter guard director Mistie Bulthuis.
