Gunner Kiel, the star quarterback from Columbus East, is planning to leave Notre Dame, according to multiple published reports.
Among them, the Irish Sports Daily said Kiel would test his chances elsewhere instead of battling Fighting Irish starting quarterback Everett Golson for the job this spring.
He still has four years of college eligibility after a redshirt freshman year at Notre Dame. The Notre Dame athletic department or coaching staff has not yet commented, nor has Kiel himself, according to reports.
Kiel initially committed to play for Indiana University, then changed his mind and instead said he would attend LSU. Kiel eventually signed with Notre Dame on Jan. 17, 2012.
At Columbus East, Kiel threw for 2,715 yards and 28 touchdowns during his senior year in 2011, earning the honor of Indiana Mr. Football.
This story will be updated as developments become known.
