Columbus detective, sergeant will retire

The Columbus Police Department has announced the retirements of former Police Chief Jim Worton and Sgt. Marc Kruchten.

Worton, a detective who joined the department in 1993, will become Bartholomew County Superior Court 1 judge after the first of the year.

While on the department, he served as a patrol officer; detective and sergeant in the uniform and investigation divisions; captain in the investigations division; and deputy chief, according to current Chief Jason Maddix.

Worton served as police chief from January 2008 to January 2012 and was an instructor in several disciplines, served on the SWAT team and investigated crimes that included crimes against children.

Kruchten began on the department in 1980 and served as a patrol officer, detective and sergeant in the uniform and investigation divisions. He has been a hostage negotiator, ice water rescue and recovery specialist and an arson investigator, and he led several major criminal investigations, according to the department.
