An off-duty corrections officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries when he was struck by a vehicle as he was running after a North Vernon man who was wanted by police.
The officer, whose name was not released, was taken to St. Vincent Jennings Hospital.
The officer was fueling his vehicle at a gas station next to the Jennings County Jail about 5:25 p.m. Wednesday when he and a colleague noticed a man they knew was wanted on charges of failure to appear for a recent court hearing.
As the officers approached the man, Ryan Shelley, 27, of North Vernon, Shelley ran across State Street, according to Jennings County Sheriff’s Department.
The officer was struck as he tried to cross State Street.
Other officers who arrived on the scene arrested Shelley and took him to Jennings County Jail. Police said more charges could be filed.
The vehicle that struck the officer failed to stop. Police asked that anyone with information about the incident call North Vernon Police Department at 346-1466. No vehicle description was available.
