Edinburgh has a new clerk-treasurer who will manage the town’s finances.

The town council appointed Edinburgh resident Scott Finley to serve as clerk-treasurer for the next three years.

He’ll be responsible for overseeing the town’s finances, including the $4.8 million budget, handling payroll for 60 town employees and maintaining town records.

He replaces clerk-treasurer Jackie Smith, who recently was re-elected but decided to retire.

Finley will serve out the remainder of the four-year term.

The council, and not a political caucus, picked Smith’s successor since he was elected as an independent candidate, town attorney Dustin Huddleston said.

More than 20 people applied for the job, but an Edinburgh resident had to fill the position, Huddleston said.

Finley is a town resident and recent graduate of Indiana University.

Town council members were impressed with his business degree and four semesters of accounting classes, town council president Ron Hoffman said.

The salary for the position is about $44,500.
