Upgrading the deteriorating sidewalks and curbs around the Bartholomew County Governmental Office Building is going to cost taxpayers more than expected.
The project at Third and Franklin streets, which will be similar to the work completed on the Washington Street side of the County Courthouse last year, is intended to meet standards established by the Americans With Disabilities Act. If those standards are not met, the county might be at risk of losing millions of dollars in federal highway funds.
But while the county's estimate was between $80,000 and $90,000, County Commissioners President Larry Kleinhenz said the only bid received by Monday's deadline was $126,000.
