Cummins Inc. has another national crown to crow about after The Motley Fool, a multimedia financial services company, named the Columbus-based engine maker the No. 1 company in America.

The Motley Fool, which released a Top 25 ranking of U.S. corporations, gave Cummins the No. 1 spot, praising its environmental leadership and workforce development efforts.

“It’s easy to be sustainable in an industry like software or upscale retail, when your business isn’t very environmentally intensive in the first place,” The Motley Fool said. “But as a manufacturer, especially an engine maker, one might expect that Cummins would have to use lots of resources and create lots of pollution in order to stay competitive. Nothing could be further from the truth.”

Jon Mills, a corporate spokesman for Cummins, said the engine maker was pleased to learn of the fresh national praise.

“This recognition by The Motley Fool demonstrates Cummins’ deep commitment to our mission, vision and values as we work to exceed customer expectations, strive to do what is right, generate positive results for all stakeholders and demand that everything we do leads to a cleaner, healthier, safer environment,” Mills said.

The Motley Fool said it spent the past several months studying more than 1,700 public companies to name what it sees as the 25 best public companies in America.

In addition to Cummins, the top 25 was sprinkled with other familiar corporate names, including Google, Costco, Brown-Forman, Coach, Whole Foods, Nordstrom, Pepsico and Starbucks.

“Companies were measured by their success in serving investors, customers, employees, and the world at large,” the financial firm said.

The Motley Fool praised the engine maker’s ability to trim its own greenhouse gas emissions and said that was a major factor in the firm gaining the highest ranking.

“Cummins has aggressively cut its own greenhouse gas emissions, reducing emissions 28 percent from 2005 levels by 2010. This achievement allowed the company to win the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Climate Leadership Award,” it said in an article on The Motley Fool website.

Here are a few other comments The Motley Fool published on its website about Cummins’ achievements:

“Cummins is a leader in the design and manufacture of world-class, high-performance engines for trucks, buses, light-duty vehicles and heavy equipment. It also produces power generation equipment like diesel generators, emissions solutions and fuel systems.

“Cummins’ products are renowned for their fuel efficiency and reliability. Employees laud the company’s integrity, work-life balance and culture of development,” the article said.

The Motley Fool went on to say that Cummins has made the world a safer and greener place with its strategies to trim greenhouse gas emissions and “invest significantly in education and philanthropic efforts across the globe.”
