Diver finds missing teen at Edinburgh dam

Follow The Republic:

A Indiana Department of Natural Resources diver found the body of missing Franklin High School football player Jason K. Moran, 17, at the base of the Edinburgh dam at about 10:22 a.m. this morning, said DNR spokesman Jet Quillen.

Moran's body was found in the dam's "boil line," the area where the water churns in a circular motion, Quillen said. It had been too dangerous Saturday to send divers into that particular area, but a tethered diver was sent in this morning based on the river conditions, Quillen said.

Searchers had been told that large debris, including railroad ties, were in the water in the boil line, which would be dangerous to divers, he said.

Searchers had been looking since about 12:15 p.m. Friday for the teen, who was one of five Franklin High School students who had been swimming in the Big Blue River near the dam.

One of the students, Sarah McLevish, 16, was swept over the dam and Moran, Michael Chadbourne, 16, Trent Crabb, 17, and Mark Nally, 18, went over the dam to rescue her. They were assisted by passers-by who heard their calls for help.

Crabb and Nally, who rescued McLevish and Chadbourne with the help of passers-by, were not injured. McLevish and Chadbourne were listed in critical condition Saturday at an Indianapolis hospital.
