A spare tire that fell from a pickup on Interstate 65 caused a wreck that left a Bartholomew County woman hospitalized.

Kathleen Petersen, 69, of Columbus had to be cut out of the 2014 Toyota Corolla she was driving after the incident, reported at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, according to a news release from the Indiana State Police Post at Versailles.

Petersen was treated for cuts and bruises at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour, Trooper Matt Holley said Thursday.

Petersen was driving north on the interstate near the 46-mile marker south of Seymour when her vehicle hit the tire, flipped over and slid on its top for about 300 feet, Holley said. It came to rest in the passing lane.

Witnesses told police a black 4x4 pickup apparently lost the spare tire from under its bed and continued north.

Holley said it’s likely that the pickup driver didn’t know the tire had fallen from the truck.

Seymour firefighters helped free Peterson from her car. She was treated at the scene and taken to the hospital by Jackson County Emergency Medical Services.

Officers with Jackson County Sheriff’s Department assisted Holley at the scene.

Anyone with information about the pickup should contact Holley at 812-689-5000.
