Education plentiful through solid waste district

Follow The Republic:

The school year is just beginning for local students and educators, and the Bartholomew County Solid Waste Management District wants to remind teachers that we have many free resources available to assist in the classroom or with your community group.

From field trips to presentations to classroom supplies/furniture, we can assist your classroom or community group.

Recycling Center field trip

Free educational tours of the Recycling Center are open to all ages and are offered year around. Tours are structured to your grade level or age.

Attendees will see how a variety of materials are recycled and how they are handled.

Also, Solid Waste partners with kidscommons for additional programming to include a tour of our bioswale and a educational recycling presentation. Transportation costs are covered by the district when using buses from Bartholomew Consolidated or Flat Rock-Hawcreek school corporations.

Landfill field trip

Free educational tours of the county landfill are offered seasonally after spring break to fall break in the school calendar and are for Grade 3 and up. Tours are structured to your grade level or age, and also are available to community groups in the summer months.

Attendees will tour the landfill, including the wetlands located at the facility. During the students’ visit, they will experience the landfill trolley tour, where they will learn about landfill construction, see an active landfill cell and learn how modern landfills are designed to protect the environment around them.

Students also will go through the wetlands and house educational programs with kidscommons. Transportation costs are covered by the district when using Bartholomew Consolidated or Flat Rock-Hawcreek school buses.

Community presentations

Free classroom and community presentations are available year-round to bring to your classroom or community group in Bartholomew County. Presentations are available on many topics, including recycling, reuse, landfills and more.

Little Red School House

These reuse facilities have a wide variety of materials available at no cost such as art/craft supplies, classroom supplies and furniture. Items are limited as availability depends on donations.

Little Red School House (Recycling Center) and Little Red School House Too (Landfill) are open to all educators of Bartholomew County, including school teachers, scout leaders, after-school teachers and community group leaders.

Little Red School House is open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday and 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Recycling Center. Little Red School House Too is open 8 to 10 a.m. on the first and third Saturday of every month.
