Eight people were injured, and three remain in an Indianapolis hospital after a three-vehicle crash on State Road 135.
A vehicle trying to cross Smokey Row Road was struck by two vehicles that were heading north and south on State Road 135. All six members of a Columbus family were taken to the hospital, along with two other people.
William Parker, 27, of Columbus, is being treated at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital and his condition wasn’t available Monday. Gwendolyn Parker, 5, also of Columbus, and Susan Widolff, 61, of Guilford, are both in fair condition at the hospital, a hospital spokesperson said.
The accident happened at the intersection of Smokey Row Road and State Road 135 in Bargersville. Samantha Parker, 28, Columbus, was driving west on Smokey Row Road about 3:10 p.m. Saturday.
Drivers going east and west on Smokey Row Road have a stop sign, but the drivers going north and south on State Road 135 do not have to stop, and the speed limit on State Road 135 at the intersection is 55 mph, deputy chief Todd Bertram said. The police department has responded to multiple crashes at the intersection because drivers think they have enough time to cross State Road 135 but don’t realize how fast traffic is moving, he said.
Samantha Parker told police she stopped at the stop sign and then began to cross State Road 135. At the same time Charles Treadwell, 63, of Morgantown, was driving north on State Road 135, and Morand Widolff, 62, of Guilford, was driving south. Parker didn’t make it across the intersection, and was struck by both vehicles on State Road 135, the report said.
Morand Widolff, Susan Widolff, Samantha Parker, William Parker, Gwendolyn Parker, Annabelle Parker, 1, Maxwell Parker, 4, and Kylie Parker, 7 were all taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital. William Parker is being treated for internal injuries, Gwendolyn Parker for a head injury and Susan Widolff for chest pain, the report said. The other five people were treated and released, a hospital spokesperson said.
