Elwood Staffing expanding in Columbus

Follow The Republic:

Elwood Staffing Services will expand its Columbus headquarters and create up to 40 jobs by 2017, the company announced today.

Chief Executive Officer Mark Elwood said the company has outgrown its office space in the corporate headquarters at 4111 Central Ave.

The company has purchased a building across the street at 4105 Vickers Drive, which was constructed in 2002 and owned by Russell Development. It had served since 2005 as the Ivy Tech Community College administration building.

Elwood Staffing plans to renovate the 5,344-square-foot Vickers Drive building into new offices for corporate staff and provide additional meeting and training space.

The company will continue to use the Central Avenue location for corporate employees, Mark Elwood said.

Ivy Tech vacated the building Thursday, said Randy Proffitt, the college’s executive director for marketing and communications spokesman. The building had 10 offices plus training and conference rooms, and Ivy Tech personnel who had been based there were transferred to the college’s nearby main campus, he said.

The purchase price was not immediately disclosed.

New job offerings for the corporate offices will be in accounting, legal, information technology, human resources and occupational safety.

The building renovation will include painting, carpeting, and new furniture and equipment, with work completed by September, Elwood said.

Elwood Staffing’s Columbus branch office, where customers visit to find jobs, will remain at 2506 25th St.

The company, which was founded in Columbus in 1980, provides employee talent to clients around the United States and Canada. The company employs 200 people in Indiana and about 1,000 across the U.S.

The Indiana Economic Development Corp. has offered Elwood Staffing up to $425,000 in conditional tax credits based on the company’s job-creation plans, IEDC President Eric Doden said. The tax credits are performance-based, meaning until the employees are hired, the company is not eligible to claim the incentives.

“By selecting Indiana for new headquarters jobs, companies like Elwood Staffing are bringing economic momentum to our state,” Doden said.

Elwood has more than 250 service locations in 31 U.S. states and Canada.

The announcement was the second major one by Elwood in just over a week.

The company announced July 28 that it had purchased the assets of Encore Staffing Services, acquiring 12 branch offices in the Midwest, West and Northeast.

Elwood Staffing gained offices in California, Colorado, Texas, Arizona and Pennsylvania and entered the Missouri and Kansas markets.

Purchasing Encore Staffing will increase Elwood’s annual revenues to about $900 million. All Encore offices are expected to be rebranded with the Elwood Staffing name within 90 days.

Although the two announcements were significant, and close together, Elwood said they are not necessarily related.

“We’re committed to growth,” he said, and acquiring Encore was part of the company’s growth plan.

Elwood emphasized that through expansion, the company will continue to be based in Columbus, where family members live.

“We consider it our home,” Elwood said. “We’re very committed to Columbus. We’re trying to be the best community partner and corporate citizen that we can be.”

Elwood Staffing, a Columbus-based family firm that has become one of the largest in the nation, was launched as a consulting company in 1980 by David L. Elwood, chairman of the board. The company expanded in 1985 to provide pre-employment testing. By 1987, the first of Elwood’s three sons joined the business full time.

Now, Mark S. Elwood is chief executive officer, John A. Elwood is company president, and Michael D. Elwood is president of Elwood Professional.

In 1994, the company began providing staffing services and soon was recognized among the 100 fastest-growing businesses in the state by Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business.

After acquiring a Salt Lake City-based competitor in 2013, Elwood Staffing became one of the 20 largest staffing companies in the United States.

Ranked as one of Inc. 5000's Fastest-Growing Companies, Elwood Staffing has grown from $1 million in revenue in 1996 to an expected $900 million for 2014. Elwood Staffing is projected to reach $1 billion in sales in 2015.

Elwood Staffing received the CareerBuilder 2014 Best of Staffing Client Award and the 2014 Best of Staffing Talent Award.
