Etymologists of Sunrise, one of the two teams of the Columbus Sunrise Rotary Club, won the Bartholomew County Literacy Task Force Spelling Bee in a sudden death tie-breaker against the Ivy Tech team, Ivy Spell Tech-ers.
The downtown merchants team, DOWNTOwN A, B’s, placed third.
The annual event supports the Tots Reading Lots Program, which puts thousands of books in the hands of preschoolers to better prepare them for school. Since the program’s inception, more than 14,500 books have been distributed to local children.
The downtown merchants group also won for best name, while the Meridian Kiwanis team, Klever Kuackers, came dressed as ducks and won the award for team spirit. The award for best costumes went to White River Broadcasting’s team, Bee Dynasty.
The most misspelled word Tuesday evening: inspissate, which means “to make thick or thicker.”
