A bowl-a-thon and silent auction fundraiser for a Cummins Inc. engineer battling lung cancer will be from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday at the Columbus Bowling Center.

Organizers said they hope to raise $25,000 for Chris Sanger, who was diagnosed with cancer in April.

A total of $7,235 has been raised so far. The family — which includes wife Sarah, who just earned a nursing degree; son Luke, 8; and daughter Lilly, 6 — will put the money toward medical expenses not covered by insurance.

Sunday’s gathering will include food donated by area restaurants. Attendees wanting to eat will be asked for a donation.

The family has maintained a site following Chris’s treatment and progress at caringbridge.org. He has undergone radiation and is currently undergoing chemotherapy at Indianapolis’ IU Simon Cancer Center.

Sarah said her husband’s treatment has been affected by a glaring lack of studies on small-cell lung cancer diagnosed in nonsmokers such as Chris.

“We also are looking for an outlet for advocacy,” Sarah said, “because there’s such a stigma with lung cancer.”
