Staff Reports Richard “Zelmo” Beatty recalls his former Seymour High School basketball coach with fondness and respect, a man who offered life lessons and demanded much in return. “He was fair and a great person,” Beatty, a Class of 1971 graduate, said Thursday of Lloyd E. “Barney” Scott. Scott, 85, died Wednesday at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour. “He taught you a lot of things about life that you wouldn’t get otherwise,” Beatty said. “He believed in you and he respected you, but he demanded a lot out of you.” Scott was a longtime boys varsity basketball coach and later served Seymour Community Schools as its financial director before retiring. He coached the Owls to a 25-1 season in 1970 and won 11 sectional and six regional championships.
