Fire Station 5 plans day for community involvement

Follow The Republic:

Columbus Fire Department will have a Community Day at Fire Station 5 from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Station 5 is located at 100 Goeller Court. The architect for Station 5 was Susana Torre. Station 5 opened in 1986 to provide fire protection on the west side of Columbus. According to Torre, the fire station was designed for the specific purpose of integrating women in the firefighting force.

The station has private bedrooms and bathrooms and the kitchen and dining area create a family atmosphere.

Station 5 serves the Tipton Lakes and West Hill area as well as portions of Interstate 65 and State Road 46. Station 5 houses Engine 5 and Columbus Regional Heath EMS 4 Paramedic ambulance. Engine 5 is equipped with a rapid deployment craft that is used for cold water/ice rescue. The city’s hazardous materials trailer operates out of Station 5.

During the Community Day, visitors can talk to firefighters and pick up fire prevention materials. Children may meet firefighters and sit in a fire engine. Light refreshments will be served.
