Virgil Walls watched firefighters try to save his burning home late Tuesday, comforted by neighbors who were able to save one of his pets, but nothing else.
Walls had lived at 589 Dawson St. near Garden City for about 35 years with his dogs and cats. He wasn't home when the fire started at about 3:50 p.m., but arrived to find flames and heavy smoke engulfing the one bedroom structure.
