Fire damages northeastern Columbus home

COLUMBUS, Ind. — A fire in an exhaust fan caused $15,000 in damage to a northeastern Columbus home, firefighters said.

The family renting the home in the 3400 block of Earl Court noticed smoke even before smoke alarms began sounding, said Matt Noblitt, spokesman for Columbus Fire Department. Everyone escaped the home safely.

Columbus Fire Department was called to the scene at 1:06 p.m. and found that a fire had started in a bathroom exhaust fan and smoldered for hours. It burnt through piping and halfway through seven ceiling joists, Noblitt said.

There was very little smoke damage, Noblitt said. However electricity had to be cut to the home.

The rental home is owned by Claude Wright, Noblitt said.
