Firearm safety education offered by local police

The Columbus Police Department is offering a Citizen’s Firearms Safety Course.

The course, which is taught by law enforcement officers, is a one-day class conducted at the Columbus Police Department’s pistol range. The classes are May 3 and Sept. 20.

It is designed for anyone with an interest in firearms, their safe handling, the safe storage of guns, an understanding of Indiana gun laws and enhancing shooting skills.

The class will consist of a half-day of classroom lecture/training and then moving to the firing range for practical skills application of the material discussed in the class.

Cost for the course is $25 per individual and must be paid by check, made payable to the Columbus Police Department, and will only be accepted on the day of the class.

Participants must be at least 18, and: Bring a legal, modern handgun that will pass instructor inspection for safety and reliability.

Bring a minimum of 100 rounds of new manufactured ammunition.

Have a belt holster specifically made for the handgun.

Bring eye and ear protection.
