Four hurt in incident on Saturday at Springhill Camp

Follow The Republic:

Four people were injured Saturday when they were struck by an out-of-control truck pulling two wagons full of campers and counselors at a camp west of Seymour.

A 7-year-old Indianapolis boy was the most seriously injured in the incident reported at SpringHill camp on State Road 258.

That youth, whose name has not been released, was flown to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis by air ambulance, according to a report from Jackson County Reserve Officer Scott Davis.

Davis said later in the day that the boy was being treated for a broken collar bone and broken ribs, a small laceration to a lung and some broken teeth.

"He hopes to be released tomorrow," Davis said of the boy who does not appear to need surgery.

A 35-year-old man, who is a camp counselor, and two other boys from the Indianapolis area — a six year old and a seven-year-old — were treated and taken to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour.

Davis said the four were injured when a 2004 GMC pickup truck, pulling two wagons loaded with campers and counselors, suffered what appeared to be a mechanical failure involving the brakes on the pickup truck.

The truck was coming down a hill, when the driver, Ellen Guse, 21, of Columbus, was unable to get the truck to stop, Davis said.

Guse was able to avoid striking another truck/tram combination that was stopped at the bottom of the hill by driving off the road into a grassy area on the side of a dam.

That's when three campers and the counselor who were walking in that grassy area were injured.Davis said the counselor was able to get two of the three campers out of the way, but not before he was struck in the back.

The counselor was treated for back pain while the 6-year-old was treated for a bump on is head. The other 7-year-old sustained a wrist injury.

County officers Rob Henley and Adam Nicholson assisted Davis along with emergency personnel with Hamilton and Pershing township fire departments.
