A 2-year-old Columbus girl who was found unresponsive in an above-ground pool has died.
Jazzilyn Jenkins was pronounced dead at 6:26 a.m. Thursday at an Indianapolis hospital.
The cause and manner of the girl’s death will not be available until late today, after an exam, according to the Marion County coroner’s office.
Jazzilyn was found in a 4-foot-deep pool at 5162 Willa Way at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday, said Maj. Todd Noblitt, chief deputy for the sheriff’s department.
The home is in the Lowell Addition, just northwest of Columbus, where she had been visiting relatives. They found the girl in the pool, Noblitt said.
Relatives, neighbors and emergency medical personnel performed CPR and were able to get a pulse, Noblitt said.
The girl was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital and then by helicopter to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health, where she initially was listed in critical condition.
Investigators don’t know how long the girl was in the pool before she was discovered, Noblitt said.
The sheriff’s department called in Child Protective Services as part of the investigation, which is continuing, he said.
This was the first backyard drowning of the year in the county, according to Larry Fisher, Bartholomew County coroner.
