One of the newest hires at Flat Rock-Hawcreek School Corp. says he is ready to learn the “Hauser Way.”
J.P. (James Paul) Mayer has been approved as the new dean of students at Hauser Jr.-Sr. High School, where he will be working with Principal Shawn Price to maintain a safe and positive environment for staff and students.
“I’m excited about the chance to work in such a unique community where everyone seems so family-oriented,” Mayer said.
It will be a change in environment — and climate — for Mayer. Most of his career has been spent in Texas, where his family settled after moving around for the military.
He earned his bachelor’s degree from Texas State University and then his master’s from University of Houston in Clear Lake.
His career started with roles including working as a German teacher at Friendswood Jr. High School southeast of Houston and assistant principal of Terry High School southwest of Houston.
He and his wife, Tessa Mayer, a Columbus native, moved to Indiana with their two children last year.
Mayer, who then found a job as a German teacher at Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis, said he is excited for his new challenge in Hope.
“I love Indiana,” he said.
And he is already learning his way around the school, although students will not return until Aug. 4.
“He’s just ready to go and get started with our staff and our students,” Price said.
Mayer’s responsibilities will include monitoring student discipline and attendance, assisting in staff development, crisis planning and staff evaluations.
He will replace Bob Nobbe, who was hired on a two-year contract to fill the role in August 2012.
Mayer said his personality will help him succeed in the position.
“I have an ability to work with people and listen to differing opinions,” he said.
