High waters subsiding around county

Follow The Republic:

COLUMBUS, Ind. — High water along State Road 46 between Columbus and Interstate 65 could dissipate by Tuesday afternoon, and State Road 11 could be free of water by late afternoon Wednesday, city-county planning director Jeff Bergman said late Monday night.

Bergman reported that East Fork White River at Columbus was at 15.97 feet as of 10 p.m. Monday and appeared to be leveling off.  A projected crest of 16.2 feet  was forecast for about midnight Monday.

Other high-water trouble spots in Bartholomew County were already subsiding by 9:30 p.m. Monday, Bergman said:

  • Driftwood River at Edinburgh was at 16.47 feet and falling. The unofficial crest appears to have occurred at 7:15 p.m. Monday at 16.54 feet. This would be the fourth highest crest on record at this location. The 10-year flood level is 15.8 feet, and the 50-year flood level is 17.2 feet. The highest crest was 20.30 feet in 1913.
  • Flatrock River at Columbus was at 14.96 feet and falling. The unofficial crest appears to have occurred at 3 a.m. Monday at 15.34 feet.  This would be the third highest crest on record at this location. The 10-year flood level is 15.6 feet, and the 50-year flood level is 17.4 feet.  The highest crest was 19.94 feet in 2008.
